Across Feb 4, 2004

Hi, thanks for your info on across. I just downloaded the personal edition and love the easy-to-follow look of it.....but the first bug is it won´t install on my computer even though I´m using windows 2000 as it requires. Will keep trying - I like the price. On a celebratory note you are the first person I´ve ever replied to in a chat forum. We middle-agies can join the information superhighway after all.

I would have liked to have tried Across - it looks like a good tool, but it only runs when you have XP or WIN 2000 as Operating system I'm not ready to upgrade my OS yet. As they say, never touch a running system...

Many thanks so far... Feb 4, 2004

Hi again
First of all thank you all very much for having shared already your precious time on this question I've posted.
I've found out in the meantime, that behind that CAT-tool is Ahead Software in Germany, who also are the programers of Nero CD/DVD-burning Software.
Than too, that the product was promoted at the Translation-Memory-Tage of ADÜ Nord in Hamburg, 24. / 25. October 2003, but no replies by real users so far.

I also had 'problems' installing - however, after two failures I had it on my machine.
Will come back with more information when I have myself tested it.

GUI is very clean and interesting, you don´t see much though. It for sure needs a lot of RAM, such that other programms don´t even start or stop abruptly. I had run a 12KB html file through, it took more than an hour to finish the work. These are but first impressions. I could have finished that translation ealier to the programm.
brandis - I am not impressed.

This tool is almost a year old already. I just wish the GUI was available in English. The web site has an English version but the program itself is German only, which makes it a bit difficult to figure out.

Hi! compared to the latest Fusion tool available at proz.com, I am personally not very excited ( looks are good though) about across. I think i would invest more time into Fusion. Thank you for the tip - brandis

While it has many desirable features that
differentiate it from its competitors, there are several points that make purchase unfeasible in its present state.

Because of "on the fly" segmentation, only 1:1 sentence correspondence between the source and target languages is possible.
The translator does not have the option to split a source sentence into multiple target sentences. Many translators regard this as a restriction to their working freedom.

Product is slow.
On the system in question (CPU: Celeron 1100 MHz, WinXP Home Edition), importing a 10-page word document took approx. 8 minutes. Aligning ("checking in") a 10-page document and its existing translation took as long as 15 minutes. These compare with less than a minute for most competitor products.
Databases are very slow when they contain large volumes of data. For example, a bilingual terminology file containing some 35000 entries was exported in CSV format, and imported into CrossTerm. Correct import could be confirmed by examining the database files in MS-Access, nevertheless, both CrossTerm and the CrossBoard editor became so slow while searching as to be unusable.

Bug in segmentation rules.
Abbreviations are sometimes not correctly recognized. For example, the abbreviation "z. B." was not correctly treated if there was a protected space between "z." and "B.". When the protected space was replaced with a normal space, segmentation was correct.

Tried it, like it... Mar 15, 2010

I downloaded Across 5 and like it. It takes a little bit of getting to know the software but overall it does part of the job.

I dumped it after trial Mar 15, 2010

Hi!
I am using the old version of Across and I will stick with it.
I tried the new version and wasn't too impressed after all. I am working with it all time and I couldn't access my old glossaries after the download of the new version.
Other colleagues made the same experience.
Or are we stupid? Has anybody else an idea?
