I mostly translate legal texts since I used to be a solicitor and notary, but I would love to be able to translate more art texts as I find them more enjoyable.
My favorite area by far is medicine (clinical trials, active and non active medical devices, procedures instructions, field safety notices, etc.), but this is not my most common type of work: as always I’ve been translating mostly all kinds of EU texts (e-learning courses, newsletters, websites, guidelines, handbooks, legislation…). Lately I’ve also been asked to do more marketing and transcreation projects.

"Medical" as it relates to all aspects of public health, plus most aspects of the work of international organizations (anything but legal, if I can help it). | | | Peter Simon Netherlands Local time: 22:59 Ingiriisi to Hungarian + ...
as I, first, don't count my blessings, second, I'm a linguist and geographer, meaning I have to adapt to whatever comes my way based on the wide basis provided by my real professions, my family background (even my son is a lawyer) and my age. So I translate almost anything but only if the technicality is not too high. | | | Ventnai Spain Local time: 22:59 German to Ingiriisi + ... Technical and marketing | May 16, 2018 |
Many of my texts combine both technical and marketing aspects. | | | DZiW (X) Ukraine Ingiriisi to Russian + ...
It's technical, marketing, and medicine, yet as far as they pay me for it--it must be financial, nope?)

I began my career in translation back in 1973 exclusively with highly technical/engineering material, and kept this focus for almost ten years. Then I began widening my coverage.
In 2013 I finally reversed the definition of my scope and drew the line, establishing five specific areas of human knowledge where I don't translate technical material, viz. intended for their respective practitioners. I list these areas on my web site as off-limits.

My variety can occur at macro level, such as ranging from a romance/adventure novel to the detailed specs and operating/maintenance instructions for some complex electromechanical apparatus.
It can also occur at micro level. Let's take the sworn translation of divorce documents. It may be a Canadian Divorce Certificate, a 1- or 2-page statement identifying the parties, simply stating the date since when they are no longer married to each other. Likewise it may be a 50-page American or Australian Divorce Decree laden with legal and often land surveying vocabulary.
It's this variety that keeps me polishing all my instruments, because I never know what the next assignment is going to be about. ▲ Collapse | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 22:59 Spanish to Ingiriisi + ...
BIO/AGRI/Animal Husbandry, Education, e-Business and Market Research. Sometimes a bit of Medical and Pharma. Used to do some technical stuff too, but not so often these days.

As I get older, I seem to be less and less interested in variety and more and more interested in staying in my comfort zone and making a fast buck.

I prefer translating books, and I happen to be doing one at the moment, so that predominates. Logically it ought to be engineering, as I did a three-year apprenticeship on aircraft engines. It was so at one time, but I haven't had much of that lately.

My main area of expertise is fashion/textiles. I also translate marketing and retail materials, but they mainly refer to apparel, footwear and accessories, so there's always an important fashion element. | | | Romeo Baldovino Philippines Local time: 05:59 Member (2014) Ingiriisi to Tagalog + ...

... but we weren't able to tick more than one option, followed by property development and art. Oh, and translating stuff about art (modern art in particular) is no doddle. Try making sense of what artists (and far worse, art critics) say about such impenetrable works. It's often a case of "b*ll*cks in, b*ll*cks out", I'm afraid. | | | Pages in topic: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Most of the texts you translate belong to...
